Description
British. Very Early “Lobster Tail” helmet. Circa.1600 (Copper & Steel)
A very early Lobster -tail style helmet, manufactured with a two part copper skull and the front peak and lobster tail manufactured in steel, the small and large rivets are all irregular in size and shape and add a kind of decoration to the helmet. The helmet is quite light in weight and we were told by a member of the Royal Armouries that it is most likely a parade type helmet rather than one used for combat. It pre dates the English Civil War and could even slip back as early as the Late 16th Century. You can see where the ear flaps were but this, as is quite normal, are both missing (Due to them being attached by leather which in time has rotted with age). Overall this is a pleasing item and quite a scarce item, and considering its age it is in quite good condition.
