Circular bronze medal with laterally-pierced ball suspension; the face with the full-length figure of Nike, goddess of Victory, holding a broken sword, her foot on the helmet of Mars, god of war, a radiant sun rising beyond, inscribed ‘WORLD WAR II’; the reverse with a lateral laurel branch centrally, inscribed ‘FREEDOM FROM FEAR AND WANT’ above and ‘FREEDOM OF SPEECH AND RELIGION’ below, circumscribed ‘UNITED ٠ STATES ٠ OF ٠ AMERICA ٠ 1941 ٠ 1945 ٠’; on original ribbon with brooch bar mounted for wear.Condition is very good.
The medal was instituted by Act of Congress on 6 July 1945 to be awarded for service between 7 December 1941 and 31 December 1946. The medal was designed by the sculptor Thomas H. Jones.
